THIS MONTH'S HIGHLIGHT
Universal Shining of Buddha's Light - The Sacred Reunion
The head of a Sakyamuni Buddha statue in Youju Temple in Hebei province dating back to Northern Qi dynasty (550-577) was stolen in 1996 and remained lost overseas for 18 years until, passing through many hands, it finally turned up at Fo Guang Shan in 2014. Saddened by the fact that the Buddha head remained separated from its torso, Venerable Master Hsing Yun went through many hardships before finally relocating its torso, as he always wished.

On May 23th 2015, “Reunion with the Body—Buddha’s Light Shines Universally—Hebei Youju Temple Buddha Head Donation Ceremony” was conducted so that the Buddha head and its torso may be rejoined.

On March 1st 2016, a warm spring day with flowers blooming everywhere, “Ceremony of Reunion of the Northern Qi Buddha Head donated by Venerable Master Hsing Yun” took place in the National Museum of China. Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s returning the Buddha Head unconditionally is not only a magnanimous attempt to preserve historical artifacts but will remain a gracious and timeless deed to be sung of by the generations to come in the history of Buddhism.

WORDS OF THE FOUNDER

Past and Present Life

In Buddhism, there is a very profound saying that “Bodhisattvas fear causes, while sentient beings fear effects.” Bodhisattvas refrain from creating ill causes, for they know an ill cause will bring an ill effect.
Sentient beings, on the other hand, are impulsive and often act without thinking through the consequences. While we do not show any fear of creating ill causes, we dread the ill effects they bear on us.
